The deanery church of st.Matthew

After several reconstructions, the original church from the 13th and 14th centuries has a completely changed appearance, with Baroque elements predominating. The most extensive reconstruction work was carried out in 1613 - 1615 and 1740. The former was done by Jan Schütz of České Budějovice. Besides the vault, the choir was built in the western part of the nave, and a five storey tower with an open gallery was built on the northeastern corner of the church. In 1740, a gable facing the square was erected on the walls of the presbytery; it has plastic decorations and a niche for a statue of the patron saint. Thanks to its high, architectonically striking tower, the deanery church is the characteristic dominant of the town.
